The first type is called “general entrance examination”. How this type of examination works is that you have to take a “center exam” first. Center exam is the test that most high school students or other people who want to enter university in Japan have to take. They take the same test, regardless of which university they want to enter. After they take it, if they are successful, they can take other tests that are different from each other. Every school has a standard grade of this center exam to take their own examination. So some people give up to take the entrance exam for the university they wanted to go because they didn't have enough score on center exam. Also some people decided to challenge higher level university than they used to because their score of center exam was better than they thought. So after the center exam we each go take a exam for the university we want to go and receive a result of passing or failing.
The second type is called “examination for selected candidates” this is only for students who have a really good grade in high school and who are selected by their high school. This examination works mainly by introducing whom we are to the university such as an interview. This exam takes place more earlier than the “general entrance examination” but if you pass it, you will have your freedom earlier than other people who will take general entrance examination.
When I talked with my conversation partner, he said a lot of people in America choose their university by what they really want to learn. In Japan some people are also like that but there are some people who just choose the university by the name value. The reason why is that name of the university you went is the most important part in the job interview. This is why some people goes to school which is not their interest but for their educational background. I think that is not the good way to choose university and the way of Japanese company hire people needs to be fixed.
